Unlock DTS and Dolby Digital on Realtek Drivers

I bought a motherboard from MSI, Z270 Gaming M5. One of the features that make the choice, was the optical audio output.

I tryed to make it work, but was only working in Stereo mode. DTS and Dolby Digital that is the 5.1 modes, was hidden.

After some hours tying to resolve, I was thinking that was the driver that was wrong, but I found the solution.

Seems that my brand new and expensive motherboad dont have DTS or Dolby license, than the driver wouldnt show it to select.

But in a PC WORLD, where everything is possible, I found a workaround. Let's hack the driver. :)

Download this patcher and unzip it: realtek.hd.sound.driver-patch.exe

Download your driver installer and unzip it.

Run the patcher and when you click the 'patch' button, it will open a file browser. Browse through your setup to find each of the two DLLs RltkAPO64.dll and RltkAPO.dll. They are probably in a folder named 'WIN64'.

You need to make this two times. One for each file. Make one, close the patch and open again.

Run setup.exe and install as per normal. That means reboot when it says.

Now you can select 5.1 output on the SPDIF.

Enjoy your surround sound.

This will stop working in a few days when the Creator’s Update releases, unless Microsoft fixes their bug beforehand, which doesn’t seem likely so far.

Let’s see. If stop working I will find another way.

Do you know how to make one yourself?

        • Jean Brito

There is tutorials on the internet to change the binary of the DLL files using an editor. Then It can be done “by hand”. But let’s see if it will be necessary.

          • Josh Russell

Well I’d love to know how to do that… I found no tutorial for that, but I did find a bit of info related to the registry edit, “DisableProtectedAudioDG”. I think they might have adjusted something to do with that security system sometime this year. Of course I don’t know for sure.

This method dont work for you? It saved my HomeTheater system, now I play using the optical output. What you really need?

          • Josh Russell

It doesn’t work on the current insider builds. At least not for ALC892 and others. Well actually, the mod does happen, but those formats can’t be played, even on legitimate licensed motherboards.

Here is the source of the solution, take a look for your chipset.

Are you using a new driver installer? Try to use an older version.

I know, I’ve been on that thread for years. Whenever your computer gets the Creators Update, there’s a good chance that the mod won’t work for you even if you redo it. I was wondering if you actually know how to change the “binary of the DLL files” because we haven’t seen anyone around who knows how to look into the DLL files for a long time.

I’ve updated to the creators update and the dts interactive and dd 5.1 are there when you install but no longer work. It is very frustrating as obviously Microsoft have sufficiently changed it so the unlock option is no longer possible. Guess I’ll have to buy a new soundcard as can’t stand not being able to output via spdif in 5.1 by default.

It was something they broke. They’ve already fixed it in the current Insider builds. Hopefully a fill will be released soon for the Creators Update.
